If you love the delightfully whimsical look of a mix & match pantry (I do), use your leftover pickle, jam, salsa and peanut butter jars as food storage in your pantry. The trick is to remove the labels, and it doesn't have to be an awful process! Here's my tried & true way to make it easy and non-toxic.
Mix equal parts coconut oil and baking soda with a few drops of citrus essential oil into a paste, spread it over the label, let it sit for 15 minutes, and then scrub it clean.
Step-by-Step Guide
Make the paste: Mix equal parts of softened or melted coconut oil and baking soda.
Add scent and power: Stir in 2 to 3 drops of a citrus essential oil (like lemon or orange), which helps break down sticky glue.
Apply it: Spread a thick layer of the mixture directly over the label or leftover sticky spots.
Wait: Let the jar sit for 15 minutes so the oil can soak through the paper and loosen the adhesive.
Scrub and wash: Use an old toothbrush or a rough sponge to rub away the label and glue, then wash the jar with warm, soapy water
